My Kind Of Sweet Home: Dark To Light Kitchen Remodel Inspiration

October 9, 2018

Happy Tuesday, sweet friends!

If you follow my Instagram Stories, you know that we are starting the long process of remodeling our kitchen. I don’t think anything will happen until the new year, but that doesn’t mean I can’t spend hours scrolling gorgeous kitchens on Pinterest.

When we first started talking about remodeling our kitchen, I had visions of a white kitchen. But as I’ve been on my search for dark to light kitchen inspiration, I’ve been drawn to kitchens that mix dark accents with light cabinets. Throw a little brass in there and the result is stunning.

My home decor style has always been a mix of cozy and a little bit modern. I like clean lines, but I need that cozy touch that makes the space more inviting and warm. And although the farmhouse style that’s en vogue right now is pretty, it’s a bit too busy for me. (I’m not mad at a little shiplap, though.)

I’ll be sharing the whole process along the way, but for now I wanted to show you what we’re working with and some kitchen inspiration photos that have my creative wheels turning. All of the inspo photos are from Pinterest and I’ve linked the pins.

I hope you enjoy and I would love to hear your thoughts, remodeling stories and advice. Let me know in the comments!

XO

OUR CURRENT KITCHEN

I love the layout of our kitchen and wouldn’t change it, but I’ve always wished it was lighter. We will keep the stone floor because it extends into the family room and front entryway and I love the touch of cozy it adds.

KITCHEN INSPO

I love the contrast between the dark drawers and light cabinets. And those brass pendants. So chic.

This light gray is perfect.

I love how clean this looks. And that backsplash. All the heart eyes.

Those lights, So pretty.

See? I keep coming back to dark cabinets. I love, love this kitchen. I’m just not a fan of the open shelves. I like how they look, but what about the dust??

Ok here is what I think…I like all of it but the lighter cabinets are being drowned out by the white backslashes. My suggestion would be darker cabinets on your island and a lighter granite/marble tops. Then all your other wall cabinets with lighter cabinets and darker granite/marble tops and bring that up as your back splash and maybe pick a smaller spot somewhere on the back splash and do something totally different …clean look or something fun and funky that pops. I have some friends that totally remodeled there kitchen and put two pull outs on each side of their very large island that hold two standard garbage cans each and one is for recycle and the other is for non recyclable. Their kitchen is pretty large and very functional. Keep that in mind as well. 🙂

Hi Tracy! Loving the feedback 🙂 I agree – I like the combo of dark and light, too. And yes – we have those pull out garbage/recyclables too and love them! xo

    Wow! Amazing kitchen transformation.
I like the color design combination.
The white cabinets make it a stunning kitchen design.

Thanks for sharing this. I’m fan of this site

HI! I’M SUZANNE…

After working as a fashion executive for almost a decade, I’m now a stay at home mama to 3 kids and live on the North Shore of Chicago. I spend my days shopping online, decorating my new home and trying to get in a good workout, all while trying to play with my kids and getting the baby to sleep. Mom life is hard, but it can be sweet… XO

New year, new kitchen stools.   I love seeing h New year, new kitchen stools.

I love seeing how just small adjustments can make big changes in our home. I swapped out our old stools (they are ivory, from our old house and just didn’t work with the white kitchen) with black stools and I love the difference.

Our day started like this, and ended with my middl Our day started like this, and ended with my middle girl in the emergency room with what we thought was a broken finger. (It’s not! Thank God.)

I accidentally crunched my girl’s fingers in our front door tonight and I’m not sure I’ve ever felt so badly in my life.

There is no pain like when one of my children is hurt. But to think that I (accidentally) caused that pain? My heart hurt in a way I’ve never experienced.

My mama instincts took over and I did all I could to take care of my girl - snuggles, frozen peas for her finger and Frozen on the TV until The Mister got home and took her to the ER.

The second they walked out the door, my tears fell. I called my mom. I texted my friend. Then I hopped on Stories to share that I felt like the worst mom. I felt guilty and just so damn awful. And as always, you comforted me and helped me feel like I was OK.

Thank you to everyone who sent me messages sharing your own stories, and to those of you who reminded me of grace and accidents and being human.

My girl is back home now. She’s all smiles with new stickers from the hospital and cards from her big sister, proudly showing off her little splint on her finger. She is brave and full of life and I couldn’t feel more grateful.

This post is for the mama who has felt the pain of screwing up. (So, it’s for all of us.) I don’t have any advice but to encourage you to talk to your people. Don’t keep it in. Cry. Give yourself grace. And just keep loving those little ones.

Ok. Off to snuggle with my girl.

🖤
Happy New Years Eve, sweet friends! ✨     Be Happy New Years Eve, sweet friends! ✨

Before I fall asleep and fail to make it to midnight, I wanted to take a chance to thank you for all you’ve provided this year. Instagram gets a bad rap, but it truly does feel like we’ve made it through this tough year together.

From our early morning chats over on stories during the first few weeks of the pandemic, to your support when I opened up about my sobriety journey, to our collective joyous sigh when Biden/Harris saved democracy, the community we have created in this corner of the internet is a true bright spot of 2020 for me.

Thank you, thank you. For allowing me to be real and share how tough and beautiful it all can be.

Cheers (sparkling water) to 2021! Here’s to being brave, kind and full of hope.
