My Latest Reads

Lifestyle

April 20, 2020

Hi, sweet friends. I’ve been wanting to round up my latest reads for you for quite awhile – and now the list is SO long because I’ve been reading (listening to) books nonstop.

Book have always been my escape, and I don’t think they’ve ever been more important to my sanity than right now.

And because of #momlife and all it demands, these days I mostly listen to books on Audible. I listen to them while I fold laundry, cook dinner, clean the kitchen, take the dog out.

I highly recommend the majority of these books, and there was one surprising bust…

What’s the best book you’ve read lately?

HUSBAND MATERIAL | EMILY BELDEN

Latest reads, 11 books to read
(This photo was taken at a hotel, pre-coronavirus.)
I have been a big fan of Emily Belden’s since I read her novel Hot Mess two years ago. (Side note: She’s a local Chicago author who is relatable, funny and has the coolest style ever.)

When I shared Hot Mess on my IG Stories and tagged her, she sent me a message and from then I was a total fangirl.
She recently sent me a copy of her latest book, Husband Material, and I devoured it. It’s more than the usual chick lit, but it’s not too heavy. I couldn’t put it down – it’s unexpected and the twists and turns provide the perfect escape, especially right now.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK TO SOMEONE | LORI GOTTLIEB

Latest reads, 11 books to read
Easily one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. If you’re in therapy, thinking of starting therapy or love reading about being…human, you need to read this book. I listened to it in 2 days.

NINE PERFECT STRANGERS | LIANE MORIARTY

Latest reads, 11 books to read
I really wanted to like this book. I’ve read numerous Liane Moriarty books (Big Little Lies, anyone??) and none have ever disappointed. This one, however, was a bust for me. I don’t want to give anything away, but I’ll liken it to a WHOLE LOT of foreplay (like 400 pages) and then…nothing. So disappointing.

OPEN BOOK | JESSICA SIMPSON

Latest reads, 11 books to read
Well, it’s official. Jess and I are best friends. (I call her Jess.)
You guys. If you were a die hard Newlyweds viewer back in the day, this book is a MUST READ. She spills it all, and it’s fascinating. I listened to this book while I was doing dishes, folding laundry, flying to Florida, running on the beach.

INSIDE OUT | DEMI MOORE

Latest reads, 11 books to read
Oh, man. This book was beautiful and heartbreaking. I didn’t know a whole lot about Demi Moore before listening to this book, other than her infamous Ghost scene and Vanity Fair pregnancy cover. My heart broke listening to stories about her childhood, her relationship with her mom and struggles with addiction and eating disorders. This book stayed with me long after I was done with it.

LIFE WILL BE THE DEATH OF ME…AND YOU TOO! | CHELSEA HANDLER

Latest reads, 11 books to read
No one says it like Chelsea Handler. This book would have had me crying in the corner if it weren’t for the levity she provides with her sharp wit and irreverent humor. It’s everything you want from Chelsea and more. LOVED it.

CATCH AND KILL | RONAN FARROW

Latest reads, 11 books to read
Ronan Farrow for President. In this book, he details the lengths he went to out Harvey Weinstein as the predator he is. It’s harrowing and almost unbelievable that he lived through it.

TELL ME MORE | KELLY CORRIGAN

Latest reads, 11 books to read
This book should be required reading for anyone wanting to live an examined life. I absolutely LOVE how Corrigan writes.

WE ARE THE LUCKIEST | LAURA MCKOWEN

Latest reads, 11 books to read
This was my first “quit lit” read and I have it feeling it will forever remain my favorite. McKowen tells her story of getting sober – it’s heartbreaking and real and raw and was just what I needed to read in my first few months of being sober.

BLACKOUT : REMEMBERING THE THINGS I DRANK TO FORGET| SARAH HEPOLA

Latest reads, 11 books to read
Whether or not you want to quit drinking, this book is a must read, especially for women. It explores the scientific phenomenon of blackouts, and Hepola shares her story of drinking, blackouts and how she finally got sober.

UNTAMED | GLENNON DOYLE

Latest reads, 11 books to read
My love for Glennon runs DEEP and started when I read her first book, Carry On Warrior, long ago. READ THIS BOOK. READ THIS BOOK. READ THIS BOOK. Nothing I say here can even begin to do it justice.

KNOW MY NAME | CHANEL MILLER

Latest reads, 11 books to read
Chanel Miller is the Stanford sexual assault victim, and after staying anonymous for years, this book is her first reveal to the world. She is an incredible writer and details not only the night of her assault, but the grueling and soul-crushing years that follow.
