A Tired Mama’s 5 Beauty Must-Haves

August 23, 2017

Pretty sure I could just call this “A Mama’s 5 Beauty Must-Haves” and leave it at that (you know, because “tired mama” is redundant). Either way, as mamas, we could all use a little help. I know I need it.

Recently, I’ve gotten some requests for a beauty routine post, which is kind of funny because these days I don’t have much of a routine. (Well, except the routine of sprinting downstairs to make my coffee the second my eyes open. I could write a blog post about that, if you want me to…?)

I used to be diligent about showering every day, doing my hair and makeup, getting dressed. You know, pre-motherhood stuff. These days, I’m lucky to get the bare minimum done.

Maybe I should’ve called this My Bare Minimum Beauty Routine. Hmmmm. Catchy.

So, come into my bathroom with me (but not in a creepy way) and I’ll walk you through my “beauty routine” these days.

Thanks for stopping by, friends!

XO

MAMA’S 5 BEAUTY MUST-HAVES

mama's 5 beauty must-haves: Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water

KOH GEN DO CLEANSING SPA WATER

If you’ve read my blog for awhile, you know my deep, deep love for this spa water. You guys. It’s a miracle-worker. Why is it perfect for a tired mama? Because using it means you don’t need to wash your face at the end of the day. DUDE. I’m not sure about you, but that’s a GAME CHANGER. I mean, who has the energy for all of that face-washing nonsense if you’re not in the shower? Since I started using this 5 years ago, my skin rarely breaks out and I NEVER go to bed without using it.

mama's 5 beauty must-haves: tinted moisturizer

BEAUTYCOUNTER DEW SKIN TINTED MOISTURIZER

You guys. I use this tinted moisturizer every single day and I absolutely LOVE it. As a tired mama, I feel run down and my sometimes my face shows it. This stuff gives me the little glow that I need. The best part? It doesn’t feel greasy at all and almost like satin. It’s amazing. I use it daily underneath my foundation and when I feel like I need some extra moisturizing, I mix it with my daily face lotion. It’s lightweight and perfect.

mama's 5 beauty must-haves: Nars concealer

NARS CONCEALER

This concealer is one of my newer discoveries, and I can’t believe I’ve lived life this long without it.  (Can we even call that living? This is hands down the BEST concealer I’ve ever used. It’s creamy, so it doesn’t get cakey or settle into those fine lines. It brightens without giving you that fake tan goggle look. YAY.

mama's 5 beauty must-haves: mascara

REALLY GREAT MASCARA…

...like this one by Bare Minerals. True story: my husband looked at me the other day and said “Babe, you look refreshed!” which was probably the funniest thing he’s ever said because I had woken up no less than 4 times with the baby the night before. So, if it can work for me, I’m telling ya, it can work for you, too, mama.

mama's 5 beauty must-haves: dry shampoo

DRY SHAMPOO

OK, I won’t be offended if you file this one under DUH. I mean, we all know the equation: coffee + dry shampoo = motherhood. Right? Right. I realized very quickly into this motherhood gig that my shower is the first thing to go. (Next? Eating an entire meal.) Enter: dry shampoo. It’s especially a lifesaver after a workout when I’m all sweaty and gross and need to look like a human.

mama's 5 beauty must-haves

(And of course, don’t forget the coffee.)

This makes me so happy to read. I swear since becoming a mother I basically look like a homeless person every day and less I have an event to go to and miss the days where I look put together. It’s so hard to spend that extra time getting ready when you could be doing other things like sleeping, eating or taking care of your house when you’re not With the kids.

8 Things Better Than Wine. 🙌🏻 I shared this 8 Things Better Than Wine. 🙌🏻 I shared this in a blog post earlier in the week, but wanted to share a few here, too. Head to mykindofsweet.com for the full list + to shop my look. 🖤 #thesobermomlife

FREEDOM | This might sound dramatic, but hear me out. When I made the decision to break up with alcohol (wine specifically, since that was my drink of choice), I felt…FREE. No more mental energy spent on that tricky alcohol equation, wondering how much to drink, if I should have another drink, should I have a drink at all, etc, etc and on and on. Taking alcohol out of the equation completely is SO freeing.

DARK CHOCOLATE | I’ve always been one to prefer eating my calories rather than drinking them. So why, then, was I OK with drinking so many calories when it came to red wine? (Not to mention the sugar.)

RESTFUL SLEEP | Back when I would drink a glass (or two or three) of wine while I was cooking/eating and after dinner, while at the time I didn’t realize it, now that I’ve been without alcohol for so long, I can say unequivocally that wine messed with my sleep. As a mom, my whole goal in life is for my family and me to get good sleep. So, it’s ironic that I was drinking something that would almost guarantee I wouldn’t get restful sleep.

A CLEAR MIND | This one is a big one. Alcohol dulls…everything. It’s what tricks us into thinking we’re more relaxed and that it helps with anxiety. (Spoiler alert: it makes anxiety SO much worse.) It dulls our senses, which means that we’re not fully present to experience LIFE. I don’t know about you, but it feels like I blink and my kids are older. Taller. Putting on their own shoes. I don’t want to dull my senses. Life goes so quickly and it’s all such a blur already, I don’t want to intentionally make it more so with alcohol.

Also, in case you see pretty pics + forget what goes on behind the scenes, I need to let you in on a little secret: I was scared.

I was scared I would mess it up. That the photos would be awkward (hey 👋🏻), that my answers to the questions would be lame. That overall I would...come up short.

Still, I said yes, anyway.

I said yes through the fear and I decided to be brave.

I’m telling you this because I think it’s all too easy to assume that other people aren’t scared. That you’re the only one.

I can honestly say that literally ANY time I’ve done something out of my comfort zone, I’ve been scared. (So pretty much like anytime I deviate from my normal everyday comfy routine. 😬)

Being scared isn’t bad.

I think being scared just might be the first step in being brave.

(Oh and also. I don’t mean like “in your gut” scared. Listen to your gut. That’s a whole other post. 😉)

Thank you to @robinsubarphoto + @theresa.demaria.stylist for making the whole process not at all scary! 🖤  📷 @robinsubarphoto
