How to Get Effortlessly Beachy Waves at Home

Sick and tired of always pulling your hair back into a ponytail? I’m with you. And yes! It’s possible to get effortlessly beachy waves at home. No more heading to the salon for a blowout every week. (Do we still do that? Who on earth has that kind of time? Not this girl.)

The Best Tools & Products for Achieving Beachy Waves

How to Prep Your Hair for Beachy Waves

Achieving my beachy waves all starts in the shower. I pick my shampoo and conditioner carefully, since I have fine hair and the wrong products can weigh my hair down and it can feel greasy very quickly. I look for volumizing shampoo, and this one from Living Proof is one of my favorites.

I like to spray my hair with my favorite dry shampoo before I start curling. I find that when my hair is too clean, my curls just don’t stay. I spray my whole head with this dry shampoo (it’s THE best).

Step-by-Step Tutorial for Creating Beachy Waves

First, blow dry your hair, either with your head upside down, or with the round brush Dyson attachment. It took me awhile to try the Dyson Airwrap, but now that I have, I’m a diehard fan. I love that it doesn’t scorch my hair and is more gentle on it than regular hair dryers. I love using the round brush tool to give my hair the volume and height it needs. It’s important to get it totally dry and achieve volume so the curls don’t weigh down your hair.

Next, depending on how much time I have, sometimes I clip half of my hair up and start with the bottom layers. Otherwise, I’ll just start curling in the front. I like to choose random pieces of hair and start curling, working my way around my head. It’s not important to be symmetrical or even and it’s better if it’s more random. When I’m done, I’ll choose some pieces and curl closer to my head to avoid having that shelf-like curl all the way around. (See video.)

I still prefer this Hot Tools curling iron, though. It really does give me the perfect curl. I leave about an inch of hair out of the ends, so I don’t end up with ringlets. Because, you know, it’s just not that kinda party. (Who remembers the movie Curly Sue from the ’80’s?) I have it in the 1 inch barrel.

Last, it’s a quick spritz of dry shampoo again before I lightly brush out my curls.

Beachy Waves for Fine Hair

I recorded this video in 2018 (wow, how long ago was that?!), but it’s still how I curl my fine hair to get my beachy waves.

Beachy Waves for Short Hair

I’ve been known to chop my hair at least once a year. My hair grows so quickly (I swear, not drinking alcohol has a lot to do with having healthy hair!), so I try not to freak out too much if I feel like it’s too short. I love the look of beachy waves on short hair. It has a messy, free look that is so chic.

How to Make Beachy Waves Last Longer

The secret to making my beachy waves last longer? Yep, it’s the dry shampoo! If you have fine hair like mine, make best friends with dry shampoo. Also, it sounds crazy, but you really can train your hair so you can go longer between washings. I used to have to wash my hair every day, but now my curls last 2 days, maybe even 3 if I don’t work out.

  1. Love seeing/hearing your voice instead of pictures. Thanks for the tutorial! How often do you curl your hair?

    • suzanne says:

You’re so sweet! Thank you. It depends how many times I wash it! Ha. Most days it’s back in a low bun – I’d say it’s a good week if I curl it twice 🙂

  2. maria says:

Lol! I feel the same way about the “shelf!”

  3. Liz says:

So good!! I have the exact same hair, fine but a lot of it. Very good tips, thank you!!

    • suzanne says:

Thank you for stopping by, Liz! It’s taken me awhile to figure out how to manage my hair, but I think I’ve got it! 🙂

  4. Tina says:

Hi! I know this is sooooo old, but I just came across it. The link is broken for the Apothocare Essentials – can you tell me which products they are? The print on the bottle (in the pic) is to too small to see 🙂 Thank you!

    • suzanne says:

Hi Tina! Sure – I use and love the ApotheCARE Essentials Moisturizing Cleansing Shampoo + Conditioner- Vanilla, Argan Oil, Sweet Almond. Here’s a link to them both: https://amzn.to/2Z7ewd3
      Thanks for stopping by! xo

  5. Nikki says:

Just leaving this here to say how happy I am as a first time mum to have found my spirit animal for hair and beauty! You are a fabulous!

  6. Helen says:

This was one of the best tutorials I have seen for hair especially fine hair! I love how simple and not time consuming! Life saver ❣️

  7. Sina says:

This is great, thanks for doing that video! I have fine hair and I’m trying so hard to find a way to curl my hair without it taking 30 minutes. You said in the video you thought your iron was 1 1/2 inches, but mine is and it looks bigger. Is it maybe 1 1/4?

  8. Kaylin says:

Thanks for doing the tutorial, I have fine hair and this really helps! Also, could you tell me what shirt you are wearing in the video? It’s super cute!

  9. Regina says:

What type of hair spray do you use that leaves it flexible but still has a hold. I have a full head of fine hair and when I use hair spray on it in the morning towards the end of the day it’s bulky and just yuck!

  10. aj says:

Thank you so much for this video! I’m a lazy mom too, your instructions are so good- from all the tutorials I’ve watched, I feel like I can maybe fix my new hairstyle ?
    Thank you!!
