5 Things We’ve Learned in 5 Years Of Marriage

Lifestyle

June 11, 2018

Happy Monday, sweet friends! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. We celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary on Friday, and were even able to sneak out for a solo dinner. It was amazing. As promised, here are the 5 things we’ve learned in 5 years of marriage. This was a fun post. I asked Russell to write down what he’s learned and I would do the same, without talking to each other about it first. It’s pretty cool how our answers went well together. Kinda like us. 😉

I’ve kept most of the focus of my blog on…well, me. I try to talk about MY experience and write MY stories, rather than sharing my husband’s and girls’ stories.

I’m so glad he was game to play along on this post. (Thanks, babe.) I hope you guys enjoy it!

XO

5 THINGS I’VE LEARNED IN 5 YEARS OF MARRIAGE

ONE – EMBRACE THE EVERYDAY STUFF

Dating is exciting and fun and unpredictable. Married life is about as predictable as you can get, so we’re learning to make those every day moments special. And no, not every moment is special. But it’s important to steal some time here and there to make each other feel loved and appreciated through the every day life stuff.

TWO – COUPLES THERAPY

There’s a stigma around therapy and I just don’t understand it. It’s helped us learn so much about ourselves and each other and without a doubt has made our marriage stronger. Even if we don’t have something specific to talk about, there is always “stuff” to work through. I’m so thankful my guy is as dedicated to it as I am.

THREE – SEX

Because we’re not roommates and keeping that connection is absolutely essential. It can be tough to make the time (thanks, threenager who no longer naps) because we both have busy schedules, but there might not be anything more important.

FOUR – DO WHAT YOU LOVE…TOGETHER

We have always loved working out, and it’s so much better when we do it together. There’s not much I love more than being able to get my sweat on next to my guy. We’ve run countless fun runs together and are planning on doing our second team triathlon this fall. I look forward to our Saturday morning workouts all week.

FIVE – IT GETS BETTER

I can’t tell you how happy I am that we didn’t peak at our wedding. (Isn’t that kinda like peaking in high school??) We got married after 2 years of dating, and I can honestly say that we know and love each other more now that the day we said “I do.”

5 THINGS THE MISTER HAS LEARNED IN 5 YEARS OF MARRIAGE

ONE – LEARN TO ENJOY THE MESSINESS

I was a typical bachelor before Suz and I got married. Once we were married, my thing became our thing, and our thing is…messy. Dogs and kids and diapers, it’s all messy. I’m learning to enjoy the messiness because it means our life is happy and full.

TWO – SEXY TIME

It’s so important to stay connected on a deeper level. And Mom and Dad gotta have fun, too. 🙂

THREE – BE A TEAM

We are in this together. It’s important to celebrate our achievements and milestones together – like 5 years of marriage, 2 beautiful little girls and a happy home.

FOUR – PROTECT THE WEEKENDS

Golf tournaments and weekend rides at Kettle Moraine gave way to 2 year old birthday parties and walks to the park. Spending our weekends together make us stronger and honors our commitment to our family.

FIVE – MARRIAGE IS AN EVOLUTION

In our marriage, we are constantly growing, creating and learning how to love. It just keeps getting better and I look forward to the next 50 years.
