Establishing A Nighttime Routine For Little Ones

This nighttime routine post is sponsored by Baby Dove; all opinions are my own.

What is every mama’s hope? That your babe will sleep 8 hours a night starting at day one, right? OK, I don’t want to burst any bubbles here, but I’m going to let you in on a little secret: it’s probably not going to happen.

But, the good news is there are a few steps you can take to help set up your little ones for successful sleeping.

I learned very early on after having my first baby that establishing a nighttime routine is crucial. Not only did our nighttime routine help my girl wind down and get ready for a good night’s sleep, but it gave me, a stay at home mama who craves a schedule, a routine I could count on.

Each night, I would begin our nighttime routine around the same time. No matter how crazy and full our day, we would both look forward to our quiet time together.

As soon as my second girl was old enough, I started a very similar nighttime routine. Now that there are 2 little ones running around, let’s use the word “routine” loosely, OK?

Tips for establishing a nighttime routine for your little ones:

Make sure the routine is short. We try to keep ours under 30 minutes.

Include a bath, but only if it calms baby. For some little ones, baths signal playtime, which isn’t exactly the message you’re trying to send.

Only give little ones a bath a couple of times a week. During a single bath, baby’s skin can lose moisture up to five times faster than an adult’s, making it super vulnerable to dryness.

Use an abbreviated version of the nighttime routine for nap times.

Ensure there is a clear END to the routine, to avoid it going on and on and on, all night long…

Be consistent, but also remember that sometimes life happens and that’s OK.

Quick tip: What’s just as important as establishing a nighttime routine? Making sure you use products that are gentle enough for your sweet babe’s skin. Because there’s not much worse than a rash or discomfort to disrupt your baby’s sleep. Baby Dove cleansers and lotions are made with 100% skin-natural nutrients for delicate baby skin. And while there’s definitely no one right way to parent, there is a superior way to care for baby’s skin.

BATH

A bath has always been the first step in our nighttime routine. When my girls were babies, bath time was always in the sink. Now that they’re growing up, we’ve moved to the big tub.

We’ve come to know and love Baby Dove Sensitive Moisture Tip to Toe Wash. It helps retain baby’s natural skin moisture and is hypoallergenic, tear free and fragrance-free for baby’s sensitive skin.

BABY MASSAGE

This has always been one of my favorite ways to bond with my girls. Both of them love little massages, and I enjoy singing them our favorite songs while I rub their little feet. We’ve been using and loving Baby Dove Sensitive Moisture Baby Lotion for a while now.

Baby lotion

Baby Dove Sensitive Moisture Baby Lotion is made with 100% skin-natural nutrients for delicate baby skin, and gentle moisturizers for 24 hours of moisture. It contains nutrients that are 100% identical to those found naturally in skin and helps provide moisture all day. It soothes dry skin from first use, and is created with no dyes, no parabens and no phthalates.

NIGHTTIME DIAPER, BOOK + SNUGGLE.

Baby Dove Sensitive Moisture Baby Wipes are as gentle as water and fragrance-free for sensitive baby skin, which means diaper changes are easier and we can get to our bedtime book and those sweet snuggles.

  1. I’m so thankful we started a simple routine because Phoenix now knows to ask for night-night afterwards. I actually really like bedtime. Phoenix gets excited to take a bath and put on his jammies.
