Mama Life: Baby Girl 5 Month Update

Mama

July 6, 2017

I know I start all of these posts by saying I can’t believe how quickly time is going and that I can’t believe baby girl is already x months old…but, I can’t believe how quickly time is going and that baby girl is already 5 months old.

Time is a thief and I feel that now more than ever. I want it to slooooooow down.

OK. So let’s just say that baby girl has suffered from the second child syndrome lately.

First, I realized that I haven’t done a monthly update post since she was 3 months old.

I forgot to take her 4 months photos last month.

AND, I completely spaced her 3 month Pediatrician appointment. And didn’t realize it until I called to schedule her 4 month appointment.

Oops.

But, the LOVE. Oh, the love. For anyone who is currently pregnant and wondering how in the world your heart can grow enough to hold enough love for another child: worry NOT.

Happy 5 month birthday, baby girl.

XO

BREASTFEEDING

My love/hate relationship with breastfeeding continues. We are still exclusively nursing and probably will continue until we start food around 6 months. The love part is obvious: those sweet smiles and snuggles.

The hate part? First, there’s the whole plugged ducts and mastitis thing. I’ve now had mastitis 3 times this go round, and let me tell you – IT SUCKS. It’s not even so much the breast pain. I can deal with that. It’s the awful sickness that comes with it. It feels like the worst flu ever. Over Memorial Day weekend, I got hit with it twice in 3 days. Fun times.

Thank you to my mama tribe who gave me some advice about how to prevent it from hitting again. I’ve started taking sunflower lecithin. I’m no doctor, so please don’t start taking it without clearing it with yours first, but I think it’s been helping. I’ve gotten a few plugged ducts since, and it hasn’t turned into mastitis yet…so, fingers crossed, we are on the right path.

I’m also damn tired of having big breasts. Clothes fit differently and they just get in the way.

I know then when our breastfeeding journey is over, I will miss it and mourn it and wish we had more time. (Maybe then I will just have to revisit this post…)

Those little leg rolls. CAN’T GET ENOUGH.

SLEEP

If you follow along on Insta-Stories, you know all too well our sleep battle this past month. (I talk a lot over there. Probably too much.)

Sleep was going well until the dreaded 4 month sleep regression hit. Ugh. It came a couple of weeks early, and we tried to power through. But, I was exhausted and so was baby girl. She was waking up an hour or so after I finally got her down for the night (which was taking longer and longer to be able to do), and then would wake up every 1-2 hours all night long.

My goal was to wait until 6 months to sleep train. At our 4 month Ped appointment, I told our doctor how little sleep we were getting and that I was trying to wait it out. She pretty much called me crazy and gave me the green light to go ahead and teach my girl how to fall asleep on her own.

A whole post is coming soon about how I did it, what worked and what backfired, but let’s just cut to the chase: she’s now sleeping MUCH better and can fall back to sleep on her own. I call that a success.

MILESTONES

She’s rolled over both from front to back and back to front, but now she doesn’t seem that interested in doing either anymore. She’s been too busy exploring her little toes and doing ‘happy baby’ pose as much as possible.

Oh, and she’s definitely teething because WHOA, so much drool. I’m expecting those little bottom teeth to pop through any time now.

5 MONTH FAVORITES

Well, we had a pretty great run with our DockATot, but we’ve graduated to the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit. I used it with Harper around the same age, and I can’t say enough about it.

  1. Kate Olson says:

I love you so much, baby E!!! xxoo Auntie Katy

  2. Somehow I haven’t had a plugged duct or mastitis. I hope you don’t get either of those again — ouch!! I’m so glad E is sleeping better. I hear great things about the Merlin Suit, but Phoenix wanted to sleep on his stomach once he learned to roll over at 4 months so it wouldn’t have worked for us.
