Mama Of Two: One Month In…

Mama

March 6, 2017

Our newest addition is one month old and I can’t believe it. The past month has taken so long and has gone so quickly. Days have blurred into nights and back into sleepy mornings. I’m slowly getting the hang of this mama of two thing. The key word is SLOWLY. I have moments of feeling like I’ve got this, I can do it. Then, the next minute comes and brings with it doubt and overwhelm.

I’ll get there, I know.  For now, I’m doing my best to soak up with sweet, slow moments of newborn snuggles and being the most important person to my two favorite people in the whole world.

Here’s what we’ve been up to for the past 4 weeks…

Mama of two, update

These Milestone cards (c/o) are just too adorable.

SLEEPING

Harper was a horrible sleeper, and I’m pretty sure I’m still scarred from those early months. Comparatively, this one is a champ. She starts the night with her longest stretch, which is usually about 3 hours.  From then, it’s a toss up. Sometimes she sleeps for a couple of hours, but most of the time I’m lucky to get 1 hour out of her. I just keep repeating to myself: “It gets better. It gets better.”

BREASTFEEDING

I knew I wanted to breastfeed again, because overall it was a good experience with Harper. (You can read about those adventures here and here.) This time, it came easier because I knew what I was doing. Sure, I still had the sore and cracked nipples and a bout at mastitis around 3 weeks, but having been there before, I know it gets better. She’s nursing A LOT – about every 1-3 hours. These early months are the hardest part for sure.

SWEET SISTERS

I was worried how Harper would react to another little human entering our family, but she’s been such a sweet big sister. She loves to give the baby hugs and “pet” her head. Sure, she can get a bit too lovey and sometimes she puts stickers on the baby, but it warms my heart to see my two girls together.

LIFE

We haven’t gotten into much of a routine yet, but I’m not stressing about it. I know it’ll come, in a couple of months (or 6). I’m trying to put tasks aside and savor these sweet snuggles. She wants to be held constantly and I love it. The dishes can wait. My mom has been here which has been a HUGE help, too.

FAVORITES

Dock A Tot (c/o) – Hands down the best new find yet. It’s like a sweet little nest for my baby girl, and she will snooze in it at night, which makes this tired mama very happy.

Carrier This is by far my favorite structured carrier. It’s easy to put on and doesn’t have a lot of confusing bells and whistles. Getting stuff done while holding a baby is almost impossible, so this allows me to have both of my hands (so I can wrangle the toddler, too).

Bathtub – We used this Harper, too. It cradles that little baby bum and makes them feel nice and safe so they can (hopefully) enjoy bath. Our girl is still teeny tiny, so I need to hold her while I bathe her in it.

SwaddleI still haven’t mastered the swaddle and this one comes to my rescue. It’s foolproof, which is pretty amazing in the middle of the night when I can’t even remember my name, much less how to do baby blanket origami.

Aden + Anais Dream Blanket This is the coziest blanket ever. It’s thicker and cozier than their muslin swaddle blankets (which we also love). A definite must have and perfect as a stroller or car seat blanket.

Thank you so much for this post! We have an (almost) two-year-old girl and are expecting another girl in June. I’m losing my mind at the thought of how to handle two… you give me hope! Congrats and your girls are beautiful!

  3. Lovely photos! Glad to see your daughter is loving being a big sister!

Stickers on the baby lol just wait until she has lots of hair to decorate with all her bows and clips at once! They look so sweet together. She gives me baby fever for my own baby! Love that milestone blanket too!

Awwww! What a sweeeeety! I’m due with our second any day now basically! Glad to hear breastfeeding seemed easier because you knew what you were doing 😉 Keep up the good work, mama! You’re right, it gets better and as all us mamas know, it goes by way too fast some days!
