Hospital Bag Essentials: The Second Time Around

Mama

January 9, 2017

It’s time. I can’t quite believe it. It’s time to start thinking about what to pack in my hospital bag. I woke up in a panic the other night because I haven’t done ANY of this stuff yet. And, if this babe comes early, well, I’d better get movin’.

When I headed to the hospital to have Harper, it was all a blur. My water had just broken at home and I was scared out of my mind. I’m pretty sure I just threw some things together and tried not to ruin my husband’s car.

This time, I’d like to be a bit more prepared. So, I’ve been giving a lot of thought into what I want to pack in my bag.

This is a time to spoil yourself. Well, as much as you can. So bring the good stuff. Bring your favorite shampoo. If you don’t have a favorite shampoo, get one. And then bring it. Bring rose lip balm to put on your lips. Bring your cosmetics bag. Bring anything that makes you feel special and strong and feminine and like the warrior you are. Because, girl, you made it through 9 months of a whole lotta not so fun stuff. And you’re about to go through a couple more months of hard hard hard.

I mean, let’s get this straight: giving birth is not pretty. There’s a lot of…mess. So, while I wore the hospital robes the entire time after having Harper (there’s a lot of checking going on), I look back at photos and wish that I had worn a pretty robe (like this one!) over that ugly thing. Because, vanity.

I will also throw my favorite comfortable pjs in my bag. I’m bringing my black ones just in case there are leaks. (Sorry.) They button down, which makes nursing a breeze (I mean, other than the whole chapped nipple thing). And speaking of, this nipple balm was a life nipple-saver for me.

Oh, and the mesh undies. WEAR THEM. As much as you can. Seriously. Heaven.

Unless you’re one of those pregnant unicorns, you’ll still be in your maternity clothes when you walk out of the hospital. So, don’t forget to bring your favorite maternity leggings. I’ll be packing this cardigan to wear over my nursing tank

And of course, don’t forget your phone, some snacks and possibly some of your favorite tunes if good music helps you relax.

FOR MAMA

FOR BABY

The little lamb doesn’t need that much, really. Don’t waste your diapers and wipes. Keep those at home, because the hospital will provide you with enough and then some. I’ve linked some winter essentials (like this ADORABLE bunting) and of course, don’t forget the car seat

Great suggestions!! I also bring essential oils.. sometimes those nice smells can be helpful in calming me down 🙂

  2. Amy Scott says:

I’m not due until April but at my last apt there is a potential complication which in worst case scenario could see us welcoming baby A LOT sooner. Fingers crossed against this but this post helps me greatly. This weekend my mind has been consumed with getting my bags organized just in case and even with Pinterest, I’m clueless. I want to be comfy but my vanity means I also want to be (somewhat and within reason) cute! I’m a really fussy and perfectionist type of person! I think both can be done if you choose the right things like as you said, dark colors, button downs etc. Hospital stays aren’t fun for any reason and it’s nice to be able to feel some semblance of yourself.

  3. I am hoping to get pregnant soon and I LOVE LOVE LOVE this list. I never would have thought about a pretty robe but I definitely want one for the photos.

  4. Amber says:

We are actually expecting baby number three, and I think this is a great list! Pinning for later. 🙂

  5. Jessica says:

Gosh I’m not pregnant but if I am I’m taking this one with me 🙂 What great advice!

Great list! And everything just looks so cute too! Saving this post because I can’t wait until I have my own baby!

  7. Good list! The contents of your bag are way more glamorous than mine were. I may or may not have brought adult diapers… (they’re actually super handy to wear on your way to the hospital if your water breaks. I heard from a friend…)

  8. Jen says:

Great suggestions! As a labor and delivery nurse, I’m a firm believer in pampering yourself as much as possible during your hospital stay. Pack everything you think you’re going to need and pack the things you love. Having had three babies myself, I will suggest that you bring your own pads for post delivery. Everywhere I’ve delivered and where i work currently uses peri pads the size of a small car. You’re going to have some heavy bleeding the first day and want to use those, but after that, you’ll probably be more comfortable with your pad of choice and your own underwear! I think it just helps make you feel a little more human.

Congrats mama! Can’t wait to see pictures of the new addition and read about your delivery experience!
